Audit Raises Questions About Lottery’s Education Share
RALEIGH, N.C. (WHKY) — A new audit is raising questions about how much of North Carolina’s rapidly growing lottery revenue is reaching public education.
The North Carolina Education Lottery continues to generate rising sales, but the audit found that the percentage directed toward education has declined. Although education may still receive more dollars as total sales increase, critics say the shrinking share weakens the lottery’s original promise to schools.
The findings could renew debate over whether state lawmakers should establish a minimum percentage of lottery proceeds that must be transferred to education. Lottery officials and legislative budget writers are expected to review the audit’s recommendations.
