RALEIGH, N.C. (WHKY) – North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is leading a bipartisan coalition of all 50 state and territorial attorneys general in urging the Federal Communications Commission to strengthen rules aimed at stopping illegal robocalls.

The coalition wants tougher “Know Your Customer” requirements, which would require phone companies to better verify who is using their networks and monitor high-risk customers before scammers can place fraudulent calls.

Jackson says if scammers can’t gain access to the nation’s communications network, they can’t make illegal robocalls or steal money from consumers. Last year alone, Americans received nearly 30 billion scam robocalls and texts and lost almost $2 billion to fraud.

The effort is part of Operation Robocall Roundup, a nationwide initiative led by Jackson to crack down on companies that enable illegal robocalls.
