Arrests Made In Connection To Attempted Armed Robbery
20-year-old Zion Michael Roberts of Charlotte was arrested on a charge filed by the Mooresville Police Department. He’s charged in Iredell County with felony attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon. Roberts is charged in Mecklenburg County with felony counts including possession of a stolen motor vehicle and flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle. A juvenile from Charlotte has also been charged in this case.
As WHKY previously reported, on Tuesday (January 24) shortly after 7:00 a.m., Mooresville Police Officers responded to a call for service regarding an attempted armed robbery at an address on Super Sport Drive. The victim said that when he arrived for work and exited his car, a white two-door vehicle stopped in front of his parked car.
The driver of the white vehicle approached the victim and brandished a handgun before demanding that the victim hand over his car keys. A second suspect in the white vehicle opened the passenger door but never exited. The victim ran away from the suspect without turning over his keys. The suspect then got back into the white vehicle and fled the area without taking anything from the victim. The victim was not harmed or injured during this incident.
During the investigation, MPD Detectives learned the white vehicle was registered to an individual that lived in Charlotte and had been stolen during an armed robbery in Mecklenburg County Monday (January 23). Authorities found the vehicle and positively identified the suspects. They were taken into custody in Gastonia by the Gastonia Police Department and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police during a traffic stop following a short vehicle pursuit. Two firearms were recovered from inside the vehicle.
An adult male and a 17-year-old juvenile were taken into custody Wednesday (January 25), and both reportedly admitted their involvement in the attempted armed robbery in Mooresville. They reportedly told police that they followed the victim from Mecklenburg County as he drove to work. Roberts was placed in the Gaston County Jail under a $151,000 secured bond on all charges. The juvenile was placed in a Juvenile Detention Center under a secured custody order for charges out of Mecklenburg County. Felony charges are pending against the juvenile. Roberts is scheduled to appear in District Court in Iredell County next Monday (January 30). He was scheduled to appear in District Court in Mecklenburg County Thursday (January 26). A Superior Court date is set for March 7 in Mecklenburg.
