App’s Osaji Earns Sun Belt Conference Field Athlete of the Week Honors

App State graduate student Ashlee Osaji was named the Sun Belt Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week by the league on Wednesday. The accolade is the Mountaineers’ second consecutive Sun Belt Athlete of the Week honor of the 2024 outdoor campaign after senior Taylor Smith collected Sun Belt Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week recognition on March 30.

Osaji shattered the App State program record and Sun Belt regular-season record in the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.54m (21′ 5.5″) to clinch gold at South Carolina’s Weems Baskin Relays on March 22-23. The previous program record was 6.22m (20′ 5.25″), set in 1993 by Melissa Morrison-Howard, who later became a two-time Olympic bronze medalist. The previous Sun Belt regular-season record was 6.47m (21′ 2.75″), set in 2012 by WKU’s Jade Nimmo.

The Madison, Ala. native stands second overall in the nation and leads the NCAA East Prelim qualifying list, Southeast Region, and Sun Belt in the women’s long jump rankings.

The Mountaineers will compete in NC State’s Raleigh Relays on March 28-30 in Raleigh.
