App State’s Kayt Houston has been named the Sun Belt Conference’s Softball Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. The sophomore earned back-to-back awards following an impressive four-game run for the Mountaineers this past week.
During a week in which App State traveled to UNC for a midweek contest and then hosted Georgia Southern in its first conference series at home over the weekend, Houston recorded five hits, three home runs, seven RBIs and four runs scored to accompany a .933 slugging percentage.
She began her week by driving in a run against the Tar Heels. Her RBI started a late push in the top of the seventh before the Mountaineers ultimately fell 8-4.
The first of Houston’s three home runs came in Friday’s series opener against Georgia Southern. The Rock Hill, S.C. native hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 victory. The walk-off bomb came just minutes after the right fielder made a diving play to prevent a run for the Eagles in the top half of the inning.
Houston then smashed a pair of home runs on Saturday, part of a day where she accounted for five runs batted in and three runs scored to clinch the third conference series win for App State this season.
Houston is batting .386 on the year with nine homers and eight extra-base hits. She has tallied 28 RBIs and scored 25 runs.
