App’s Houston Earns Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Honors

After a historic weekend that included two multi-homer games at the Winthrop Eagle Classic, App State Softball outfielder Kayt Houston earned Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday.

Houston was an offensive catalyst in the Mountaineers’ 4-1 weekend, driving in 11 of App State’s 44 total runs in five games. Her two multi-homer games on Friday against Monmouth and Le Moyne marked her fourth and fifth career multi-homer games and first since May 5, 2022 against Coastal Carolina.

For the weekend, Houston batted 12-for-18 (.667 average) and swatted four home runs in addition to driving in 11 runs. Her nine extra-base hits throughout the five-game stretch resulted in a 1.556 slugging percentage.

Currently, she leads the conference in home runs, doubles and slugging percentage while also being top five in batting average, RBIs and OPS.

Back in her hometown of Rock Hill, S.C., Houston’s weekend immediately began with a bang as she cracked a leadoff home run in App State’s first at-bat of the weekend. She went on to hit her second home run of the game in the fifth inning, this one a three-run homer, to cap off a two-hit, five-RBI performance in Game 1.

In Game 2, Houston continued her stellar day with four more hits, two more homers and four more RBIs. In one day, the lefty tallied six hits, four home runs and nine RBIs. Her offensive outburst resulted in two wins on the opening day of the tournament.

Day 2 saw Houston scorch four more hits throughout the two games against Winthrop and Binghamton to give her 10 hits through two days. She accounted for four of the 12 Mountaineer hits Saturday.

On Sunday, she recorded two more doubles and drove in two more runs, driving App State to a 15-run drubbing of Mount St. Mary’s in the weekend finale.

The Mountaineers will return to the field for another five-game slate this Friday-Sunday in Raleigh at the Wolfpack Classic. While there, App State will square off against ACC opponent NC State in the first of two scheduled matchups with the Wolfpack on the 2024 schedule. First pitch on Friday against Cleveland State is set for 11:30 a.m.
