App’s Hamilton Named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week

Following a historic strikeout performance against Louisiana on Friday, right-hander Xander Hamilton has been named the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

Hamilton struck out a career-high 13 batters in six innings against the Ragin’ Cajuns, allowing just two runs on four hits, on the way to his fifth victory of the season – a 3-2 App State triumph. The 13 strikeouts were the most by a Sun Belt pitcher this season, and the most in App State recorded history (since 2013).

Hamilton struck out the side in the second inning, escaped a bases loaded jam in the fifth, and capped off his outing by striking out the side again in the sixth. He fanned every hitter in the Louisiana batting order at least once.

Hamilton has now struck out a league-best 57 batters in 39.2 innings of work this season. His five wins are tied for second in the Sun Belt conference, and he is one of just two pitchers in the league to have won all three of his conference starts. The Mountaineers are 6-1 this season in his outings.

The award is the second of Hamilton’s career. He was also named the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week Feb. 22 of last season following 6.1 scoreless innings and 10 strikeouts in his first career outing with App State. Through five starts last year Hamilton ranked second in the nation with 51 strikeouts, prior to having his season cut short due to injury.

The Raleigh, N.C. native is scheduled to make his next start on Thursday at 6 p.m. against ULM at Smith Stadium.
