After a stellar weekend against Georgia Southern, App State women’s basketball senior forward Lainey Gosnell (Demorest, Ga./Habersham Central) was named the Sun Belt Women’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday.
Gosnell earns the weekly honor for the first time in her career, while it’s the third player of the week award the Mountaineers have collected. App State, Georgia Southern and Troy were the only schools in the league to finish the season with at least three weekly honors.
The Demorest, Ga., native put forth the best two-game stretch of her career as she averaged 20.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, shot 60.9 percent from the floor, 70 percent from 3-point range and 85.7 percent from the line in the wins over Georgia Southern. Ten of Gosnell’s 19 rebounds were on the offensive end as well.
Gosnell led the Apps in numerous categories, which included minutes played, scoring, rebounding, 3-pointers, 3-point field goal percentage, and free throw percentage (at least 5 attempts).
In the first game on Friday against the Eagles, Gosnell scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. She hit 50 percent of her field goals and nailed a season-high four 3-pointers. Gosnell followed that up with a season-high 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor with nine off the glass.
Going into the tournament, Gosnell is playing some of her best basketball, with averages of 14.5 points, 7.4 rebounds, shooting 49.1 percent from the floor and 39 percent from deep over the last 11 games.
She and the Apps will face ULM in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament in Pensacola, Fla. on Friday at 12 p.m. (ET).
