App’s Boyd Named to Preseason All-Sun Belt Baseball Team

App State outfielder CJ Boyd has been named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference team, the league announced Wednesday.

Boyd was pivotal for the Mountaineers’ success last season, helping App State to its first 30-win campaign in a decade and a run to the Sun Belt Tournament semifinals. He was subsequently named first-team all-conference and garnered a spot on the Sun Belt All-Tournament team.

Boyd enjoyed one of the most productive offensive seasons in App State history, slashing .364/.399/.712 in 45 games (43 starts) for the Mountaineers. The transfer from East Carolina tied a program record with 17 home runs, blasting 12 homers in his final 16 games of the season. Boyd hit safely in the final 19 games of the year, going 42-for-93 (.452) over that span.

The Lewisville, N.C., native was named the Sun Belt Player of the Week after a weekend series against Arkansas State in which he hit four home runs and went 7-for-14 at the plate with seven runs scored and seven RBIs. Boyd became the first Mountaineer since Wes Hobson (2010) to finish a season with double-digit home runs, doubles and stolen bases. He finished top 10 in the Sun Belt in batting average, slugging, OPS and home runs.

Boyd has received national recognition as well, earning a spot on Perfect Game’s All-Sun Belt preseason team in addition to being ranked as the 59th-best outfielder in the nation by

The Mountaineers as a team were picked to finish ninth out of 14 teams in the Sun Belt Conference, which was rated as the fifth-best RPI conference in the nation last season, while sending four teams to an NCAA Regional.

App State will open its season on Friday, Feb. 16 at Gardner-Webb, before hosting Siena for three games in Hickory, Feb. 23-25. App State also hosts Sun Belt weekend series against Coastal Carolina (March 22-24), Marshall (March 28-30), Troy (April 12-14), South Alabama (May 3-5) and Georgia Southern (May 16-18).

Season tickets are on sale now and include 19 home games at Smith Stadium as well as the Mountaineers’ three-game Hickory series. The 2024 App State Baseball season is presented by Chick-fil-A.
