Appalachian State’s Smith Earns Sun Belt Field Athlete of the Week Honors

App State senior Taylor Smith was named Sun Belt Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week after she recorded a trio of first place finishes and facility records at the App State Open on April 27, the league announced on Wednesday. The accolade is Smith’s first in the field category and third outdoor honor this season. She was previously named SBC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week on March 20 and April 17.

In the women’s long jump, Smith landed first with a leap of 6.32m (20′ 9″), which moved her to second in the App State all-time list. On the track, Smith clocked a personal best of 11.53 to place first in the women’s 100 meters, which moved her to fourth in the App State all-time list. She also ran the third leg of the women’s 4×100-meter relay, helping the team stop the clock at 44.85 for a first-place finish.

The three-time Sun Belt Athlete of the Week honoree ranks second in the Sun Belt, fourth in the Southeast Region, 18th on the NCAA East Prelim Qualifying List, and 41st in the nation in the women’s long jump category. In the women’s 100-meter category, she ranks ninth in the Sun Belt and 16th in the Southeast Region. As part of the women’s 4×100-meter relay team, Smith stands fourth in the Sun Belt, seventh in the Southeast Region and 45th on the NCAA East Prelim Qualifying List.

Smith and the Mountaineers will compete at the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships in Monroe, La. on May 9-11. The meet will be available to watch on ESPN+.
