Appalachian State’s Carver Named Sun Belt Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

App State junior Emily Carver was named the Sun Belt Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. Carver is the first Mountaineer to collect the accolade for the 2023-24 women’s basketball season and it will mark her second career SBC Player of the Week honor.

The Asheville, N.C. native netted a career-high 28 points in the Mountaineers’ 77-73 win over the College of Charleston on Dec. 5 in Boone. Carver found her stride in the third quarter knocking down 6-of-7 from the field, a perfect 2-of-2 from the arc, and 7-of-9 from the line, accounting for 21 of the Mountaineers’ 29 points in the quarter. She also pulled down four rebounds and made three steals.

On Dec. 10, Carver scored 27 points in the Mountaineers’ overtime loss to Richmond, coming within one of her newly set career-high. Carver accounted for seven of the Mountaineers’ 13 3-pointers, which ties her with Ashley Polaceck, Tierra Wilson, Leigh Jones, and Karen Gruca for the program record in single-game made 3-point field goals. She also grabbed a career-high five rebounds, dished out five assists, and made four steals.

For the week of Dec. 4-10, Carver led the Sun Belt in field goals (17), free throws (11), points (55), and 3-pointers (10). In the NCAA standings, Carver checked in at fifth in made 3-pointers and ninth in 3-pointers per game. She also ranked 10th in the nation for points and stood among the top-25 in free throws, field goals, and steals.

Carver ranks fourth in the league for 3-point attempts and rounds out the top-50 nationally on the season. She also stands fourth in the SBC for 3-pointers per game (2.25) and steals per game (2.5). In the points per game category, Carver ranks ninth in the league, averaging 15.9 points per contest.

The Mountaineers are back in action on Dec. 15 as they head to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on Gardner-Webb at 8 p.m. The Mountaineers will close out their road stretch on Dec. 17 in Milwaukee, WI, as they take on No. 19 Marquette at 2 p.m. CT (3 p.m. ET).
