Appalachian State’s Barrett Earns Sun Belt Weekly Honor

After helping guide the App State softball team to a 6-0 week, freshman infielder Grace Barrett has been named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. She is the Mountaineers’ second Player of the Week honoree already this season.

Barrett started all six games at shortstop last week and tallied 13 hits in 23 at-bats, which was good for a .565 batting average, while slugging three home runs and driving in 13 runs. Her week was highlighted by her nine-RBI weekend against Georgia State in the Mountaineers’ series sweep to open Sun Belt action. In her league debut, Barrett swatted a two-run homer in her first at-bat and drove home five RBIs in App State’s 9-3 win in game one.

Her week started with a five-hit day in the Mountaineers’ home-opening doubleheader against ETSU. She had two hits and an RBI in game one before besting that with a three-hit, three-RBI performance in game two that saw her bash a three-run home run in the third inning.

On Wednesday against UNCG, Barrett tallied another multi-hit game while also sparking several rallies as she reached base three times and scored two runs. Her aggressive baserunning in the fourth inning allowed her to score all the way from first base on a Peyton Darnell double, pushing across the Mountaineers’ sixth and final run in the win.

Barrett capped off her impressive weekend with her second three-hit game of the week in the finale at Georgia State, guiding the Mountaineer offense to a 10-run outburst to secure the series sweep. Her sixth-inning two-RBI double down the right field line put the Mountaineers ahead 8-6 before they eventually won 10-9 in extras.

App State will return to the field for more Sun Belt action this Friday-Sunday in San Marcos, Texas, as they embark on a three-game weekend set with the Texas State Bobcats. First pitch on Friday is slated for 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT) and can be streamed on ESPN+.
