Appalachian State Women’s Tennis Edges Out Lees-McRae

The Appalachian State women’s tennis team picked up a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Lees-McRae on Sunday. It’s the second win of the season for the Black and Gold and the second under head coach Hannah Fetters.

App State started off doubles play hot as they swept the Bobcats on all three courts, claiming the doubles point of the match. Both the No.1 pairing of Naledi Manyube/Maggie Pate and the young No. 2 pairing of Savannah Dada-Mascoll/Riley Collins each won their matches identical to each other, winning 6-2 on both courts. On court No. 3, the senior pairing of Brooke Gruber/Peri Tippins won their match by a score of 6-4 to secure the point.

The Mountaineers then picked up three huge wins in singles play to finish out the match with four wins overall. Collins won in thrilling fashion as she clinched the tiebreaker in the first set after being down by three points to win 7-6. She then convincingly took the second set 6-4 to secure a team point. Pate won in dominating fashion, winning 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 court, remaining undefeated in 2024. Manyube, the freshman from South Africa, swept her opponent on court No. 2, sweeping her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, to secure her second win as a Mountaineer.

The Mountaineers will hit the road to Blacksburg, Va. to face Virginia Tech, starting a four-match road stint before retiring to the High Country on Friday, March 1. The match against the Hokies will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday Feb. 10.
