Appalachian State Women’s Tennis Dispatches Texas State
App State jumped out to a 3-0 lead and cruised to a 5-2 conference victory against Texas State at the Bobcat Tennis Complex on Sunday.
The Mountaineers improved to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in Sun Belt matches. It’s the most conference wins for App State since its 2018-19 championship season when it finished with a league-best 9-1 record. It was also the squad’s third Sun Belt road win in four tries this season.
“I’m really happy with the way we rebounded today with this win,” head coach Ashleigh Antal said. “This was an incredibly tough travel weekend, but I’m proud of the way we fought through it and trusted ourselves today. The way we’ve been competing is exactly what we need to keep taking these steps forward, and I’m excited about our upcoming matches.”
App State won the doubles point for the fifth time in seven league contests, with wins by Ellie Murphy and Savannah Dada-Mascoll on court one (6-2) and Virginia Poggi and Maggie Pate on court three (6-4).
The Mountaineers got off to a quick start in singles with victories by Poggi on court five (6-3, 6-2) and Helena Jansen on court one (6-4, 6-1).
The match clincher came on court three when Pate won 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to build the Mountaineers’ lead to 4-1. After that, Erika Dodridge tacked on App State’s final point with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win on court four.
After playing its last four matches on the road, App State will begin a three-match homestand with a Saturday date against South Alabama and a Sunday matchup with Southern Miss.
