Appalachian State Women’s Tennis Defeats Georgia State

App State women’s tennis snapped its three-match skid with a 4-1 triumph over Georgia State on Saturday afternoon at the Lifetime Athletic Complex.

The Mountaineers improve to 4-8 overall and 3-3 in league action, while Georgia State falls to 2-14 and 0-7 in conference play.

App State won the doubles point followed by three singles victories en route to its first road win of the season.

Helena Jansen (Girona Spain, Tyler JC)/Sandra Anglesjö(Norrköping, Östergötland, Sweden/Fria Läroverken) topped Nansi Toskova/Denisa Gheorghe with a 6-1 triumph for their third straight win as the No. 2 tandem. Clinching doubles were the tandem of María José Zacarias (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/La Loma Centro Deportivo) and Ksenia Aleshina (Moscow, Russia/Little Champions), who downed Ellie Aldrich/Andreea Stanescu in a 6-4 triumph.

Georgia State’s lone point on Court No. 6 before App State won the next three contests.

Aleshina continued her solid day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Angel Carney to give the Apps a 2-1 lead. Virginia Poggi (Civitavecchia, Italy/Ernest Hemingway) pushed the Apps’ lead to two points as she defeated Aldrich. Also earning a singles and doubles win was Zacarias thanks to her straight-set victory against Stanescu as the No. 1 in the lineup.
