BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (WHKY) — Appalachian State controlled play from start to finish Sunday evening, scoring twice late in the first half and overwhelming Gardner-Webb statistically in a 2-0 women’s soccer victory at Greene-Harbison Stadium.

Taylor Duff and Lucy Harrington scored for the Mountaineers, who improved to 2-1-1 on the season while handing the Runnin’ Bulldogs their first loss.

App State finished with a commanding 28-4 advantage in shots, putting nine attempts on goal while limiting Gardner-Webb to just two. The Mountaineers also generated 13 corner kicks compared to two for the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

App State applied pressure almost immediately. Ellie Garrison put the Mountaineers’ first shot on goal in the fourth minute, forcing a save from Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Abril Montiel. Garrison had another attempt less than a minute later, while Olivia Simon forced another Montiel save in the 13th minute.

The Mountaineers continued to create opportunities before finally breaking through in the 31st minute.

Following an App State corner kick, Duff found the top center of the net at the 30:43 mark to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 advantage. Sofia Goclowski was credited with the assist.

App State doubled the lead just over nine minutes later. Walker Bristow set up Harrington, who scored into the upper left portion of the goal at 39:45 for a 2-0 advantage.

The goals were part of a dominant opening half for the Mountaineers, who outshot Gardner-Webb 16-2 and earned all seven corner kicks before halftime.

App State’s defense made the lead stand up comfortably after the break.

Hanna Skogsfors started in goal and stopped Gardner-Webb’s only shot on target in the first half. Anneliese Hindelang replaced Skogsfors to begin the second half and made a save on Andrei Chavez in the 61st minute, preserving the shutout.

Meanwhile, App State continued to generate chances. The Mountaineers recorded another 12 shots and six corner kicks in the second half. Garrison nearly added to the lead in the closing seconds, putting a shot on goal in the 90th minute before Montiel made the save.

Garrison led App State with six shots, including four on goal. Harrington and Libby Bermingham recorded three shots apiece. Duff scored on one of her two attempts.

Montiel made six goalkeeper saves for Gardner-Webb, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs were also credited with a team save.

The clean sheet was App State’s second straight after playing Western Carolina to a scoreless draw Thursday. The Mountaineers have not allowed a goal over their last 180 minutes of play.

App State has now won two of its last three matches following a season-opening loss to UNCW. The Mountaineers defeated Campbell 3-1 before the scoreless draw against Western Carolina and Sunday’s victory over Gardner-Webb.

The Mountaineers continue their season-opening stretch against in-state opponents Thursday when they travel to Greenville to face East Carolina. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
