Appalachian State Women’s Soccer Picks Up First Win of Season
Less than 30 seconds into the second half, Stephanie Barbosa swiped the ball from a George Mason defender, and promptly parked it past the Patriots’ keeper for her second goal of the match, propelling App State to a 3-0 win Sunday at The Valley.
App State dominated from whistle to whistle, out-shooting George Mason 21-4 and earned eight corner kicks in the match.
The Mountaineers first goal came off a beautiful passing combination in the 11th minute of play. Shannon Studer dribbled the ball down the left sideline and fed a pass towards the goalmouth, where Sarah Widderich redirected the ball to Barbosa for the finish. Barbosa’s brace was the first multi-goal game of her career.
App State continued to out-possess the Patriots in the second half of play. Ten minutes after Barbosa’s second tally, Izzi Wood made it 3-0 App State, scoring on a penalty kick after she induced a Patriot hand ball in the box.
Wood led the Mountaineers with five shots in the match, while Summer Bowman, making her first career start, added four shots in the match. Kaitlyn Little, Skyler Walk, and Mumu Guisasola played all 90 minutes in front of Kerry Eagleston who recorded her 19th career clean sheet.
The Mountaineers are back in action Thursday when they travel to face UT Martin. First touch is slated for 5 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
