Appalachian State Women’s Soccer Holds on For 1-0 Win Over Georgia Southern
Less than two minutes into the second half, Izzi Wood delivered a perfectly placed shot into the top right corner of the net, and the Mountaineers defense made the lone goal stand up in a 1-0 victory over Georgia Southern, Friday at The Valley.
In front of a season-best crowd – complete with parents, students, and pups – App State (5-3-3, 2-0-2), fed off the energy, creating several leave-your-seat moments throughout the match. In addition to Wood’s fifth goal of the season, Olivia Simon added a pair of narrow misses in the match.
The freshman forward hit the crossbar on a header with six minutes to play in the opening half, and again rang a shot off the woodwork on a headed effort ten minutes into the second stanza.
Both teams finished with identical shot tallies with 18 overall and seven on target for each side.
Wood led the Mountaineers with eight shots and three on target to pad her shot lead in the Sun Belt. Stephanie Barbosa and Sarah Widderich each added a trio of shots for the Mountaineers.
Kerry Eagleston posted her 23rd career shutout, recording six saves in the victory. The defense was terrific overall in the match, highlighted by a clearing effort in the final minute of regulation to preserve the 1-0 win.
In addition to remaining unbeaten in conference play, App State improves to 4-0-2 at home this season, having conceded just one goal in six home matches.
The Mountaineers will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 5, as they travel to South Alabama to face off with the Jaguars at 8 p.m. ET. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
