App State women’s soccer suffered a 3-0 setback to South Alabama on Sunday afternoon at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
The Apps fall to 2-4 and 2-2 in the Sun Belt while South Alabama improves to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in league action.
Three second-half goals were the difference in the matchup as the Mountaineers and Jags went into the second period with a 0-0 tie.
South Alabama’s offense was on the attack early in the contest with Kerry Eagleston (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) stopping three shots on goal in the first 17 minutes of the match. App State allowed only one shot on goal the rest of the half.
However, the offense was only able to get one shot off in the first half by Drew Hallum (Bakersfield, Calif./Centennial) that was to the left of the goal.
Holly Beaver (St.Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg) tallied the team’s lone shot on goal in the 50th minute but was stopped by Anita Gudmundsdottir.
Athanasia Moraitu scored the Jags’ first goal seven minutes later, which started a run of two more scores in the next 11 minutes of the matchup. Ana Helmert gave the visitors a 2-0 lead before Brenna McPartlan tacked on the third goal.
Eagleston played all 90 minutes between the posts for the Black and Gold.
App State will take a break from conference play on Thursday when it faces The Citadel on Thursday at 2 p.m. in a neutral-site contest in Greer, S.C.
