Appalachian State Women’s Basketball Falls to Gardner-Webb

The App State women’s basketball team fell to Gardner-Webb, 82-78 on Friday during their December road stretch.

Senior Faith Alston was the Mountaineers’ top scorer for her fifth game of the season, accounting for 23 of the Black and Gold’s points. Alston also dished out a team-high five assists. Sophomores Rylan Moffitt and Chaé Harris also scored double-figures on the night. Moffitt recorded her second double-double on the season with 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Harris netted 10 points, pulled down eight rebounds, and dished out three assists.

App State (5-4 (0-0 SBC)) scored 39 points off turnovers and 21 points off the bench. The Black and Gold also recorded 12 fastbreak points compared to Gardner-Webb’s four.

After trailing early in the first quarter, App State met Gardner-Webb at 7-7 with a jumper from sophomore Alexis Black. After junior Zada Porter tied things up at nine all with a jumper, Alston pushed the Mountaineers to an 11-9 lead with a jumper of her own. Despite a tied score at 11 all, the Mountaineers took a 14-11 lead, building off a free throw and layup from Carver. At the close of the quarter, App State led, 17-15.

Harris broke away for a fastbreak layup early in the second quarter to keep the Mountaineers ahead, 19-15. Alston completed a three-point play, which Harris followed up with a jumper to extend the deficit to 24-15. A fastbreak layup from Moffitt and jumper from junior J’Mani Ingram pushed App State ahead, 29-20. As the Mountaineers pushed ahead to build a 37-30 lead, Gardner-Webb drilled back-to-back treys to cut App State’s lead to 37-36 at the half.

A layup and jumper from Harris, put App State up 41-38 early in the third quarter. Moffitt grabbed a steal and drained a jumper (43-38). As Gardner-Webb worked to close the deficit and matched the score at 43 all, a trey from Alston kept the Mountaineers a step ahead (46-43). App State continued to extend the deficit, but the Bulldogs found momentum with 1:30 left in the quarter, going on a 6-0 run to regain the lead by three (57-54).

The Bulldogs’ momentum carried into the fourth period. Despite a jumper from Black, Gardner-Webb went on a 7-0 run to take a 69-56 lead. The Mountaineers steadily chipped away at the deficit throughout the quarter. Freshman MaKenzie Drout drained a late trey, which Harris followed up with a second chance layup. Despite a pair of last second free throws from Drout, the Mountaineers fell, 82-78.

The Mountaineers will close out their non-conference road stretch with a clash against No. 19 Marquette on Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. CT (3 p.m. ET). The game will be available to stream on FloSports. App State will then host Mercer at noon on Dec. 21.
