Appalachian State Women and Men’s Track and Field Opens Sun Belt Outdoor Championship
The App State men’s and women’s track and field team closed out the first day of competition at the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships with a trio of top-five finishes and seven Mountaineers advancing to Saturday’s finals in four events.
Senior Oliver Wilson-Cook finished fourth in the men’s 10,000 meters with a time of 30:33.92, while sophomore Chase Burrell took fifth with a time of 31:19.92. Sophomore Linnea Maynard rounded out the top-10 in the women’s 10,000 meters with a personal best of 37:01.94.
In the men’s hammer throw, junior Chris Wainscott rounded out the top-five with a toss of 57.65m (189′ 1″), while sophomore Daiyanna Cooper took eighth with a toss of 53.61m (175′ 10″) in the women’s hammer throw.
Seven Mountaineers have advanced to the Saturday finals in the men’s and women’s 1,500 meters, men’s 400-meter hurdles, and women’s 200 meters. Junior Jasmine Donohue stopped the clock at 4:33.41 to finish third in the women’s 1,500-meter prelim. Seniors Mariah Atwater and Taylor Smith took fifth (24.12, PR) and eighth (24.25, PR), respectively, in the women’s 200-meter prelims.
Freshman Christian Gore clocked a time of 53.65 to place eighth in the men’s 400-meter hurdle prelim. In the men’s 1,500-meter prelim, senior Jonah Morris and juniors Rylan Haskett and Dwayne Lillie took eighth (4:01.12), ninth (4:01.22), and 11th (4:02.18), to qualify for the final.
Action at the Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championships continues on Friday at 11 a.m. The ESPN+ broadcast will start at 5 p.m.
