App State softball’s Baylee Morton has earned Sun Belt Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. This is the first honor of Morton’s career and the second Player of the Week honor for the Mountaineers since joining the Sun Belt.
Morton started all five games at catcher this week for App State, posting a .429 batting average on the weekend. She hit four home runs over five games and now has five home runs this season, matching the total she hit last season. The senior scored seven runs and knocked in 10 RBIs, with a 1.357 slugging percentage.
In the 12-7 win against Charlotte, Morton matched her career-high with five RBIs, hitting a double and two home runs. The senior followed that up with a three-RBI game in the 9-5 win over UNCG, hitting the go-ahead home run in the sixth. She also knocked a home run in the final game of the series against UNCG.
After six games, Morton currently leads the team in batting average (.389), runs scored (8), home runs (5) and RBIs (12). The senior leads the Sun Belt in slugging percentage with a 1.278 and her five home runs are also good for conference leader. With 12 RBIs, Morton sits at second in the Sun Belt.
The Mountaineers return to the field on Saturday, making the trip to Wilmington, N.C. to take on the Seahawks in a four-game series. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for Noon on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.
