Appalachian State Softball Season Ends With Win Over Coastal Carolina
App State softball’s five seniors led the Mountaineers to a 7-1 victory over Coastal Carolina to conclude the 2023 season on Friday.
Emily Parrott, Mary Pierce Barnes, Kaley Coltrain and McKenzie McCullen combined for five of App State’s 12 hits after being celebrated before the first pitch. At least one of the four was involved in all seven runs scored. Kapri Toone earned the win in the circle during her final contest in the Black and Gold.
Toone and the defense held the Chanticleers scoreless through the first three innings, thanks to a trio of strikeouts by the graduate transfer.
App State struck first in the bottom of the third frame, thanks to a two-run double by Parrott, setting momentum that would last for the rest of the contest. Taylor Thorp produced a sac fly that brought home Parrott to increase the lead to four after an RBI single by Barnes that brought home Kayt Houston.
Following Coastal Carolina’s solo home run in the fourth inning, Delani Buckner relieved the second half of the game, striking out two with no runs and no hits as the Mountaineers increased the lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Parrott tallied her third RBI as Claire Carson sprinted home. In the fifth, McCullen batted home Abby Cunningham before scoring off Sidney Martin’s single to push the lead to six.
In the top of the seventh, Barnes finished her 223-game career by producing all three outs from center field.
The Mountaineers finished the 2023 season with a 23-28 record that included their first ranked win in program history over No. 23 Louisiana.
