Appalachian State Softball Lose to South Alabama in Only Game of Abbreviated Series

Following the suspension of Game 1 on Friday, the game resumed on Sunday afternoon and App State (21-15, 7-6 Sun Belt) was defeated by South Alabama (16-14, 9-1 Sun Belt) by a final score of 10-6. Due to snow over the weekend in Boone, the three-game series was abbreviated and Sunday’s contest served as the only game the two teams would play.

After just nine pitches on Friday, the game was suspended with South Alabama leading 2-0 via a two-run home run from Victoria Ortiz. The Jaguars then scored the first four runs of the day, starting with a sacrifice fly to add the first run since the resumption of the ball game. After a bases-clearing double from Gabby Stagner, the Jaguars jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the top half of the fifth inning.

The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth via a solo home run from McKenzie McCullen. App State then halved the deficit following a two-RBI double from Mary Pierce Barnes that scored Emma Jones and Kayt Houston.

South Alabama responded in the top of the seventh with four runs, giving the Jaguars their largest lead of the contest. A late push from App State started when Jones racked up a trio of RBIs following a three-run bomb to push the final score to 10-6.

Jones paced the Mountaineers with a pair of hits on the day, also driving in three runs and scoring twice. Barnes contributed with one hit while driving in a pair of runs and McCullen added one hit and one run batted in.

Delani Buckner got the start for App State, pitching five innings and striking out four Jaguars.

The Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 12 when they host NC Central in a midweek doubleheader. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
