Appalachian State Has Six Student-Athletes Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars

Six App State student-athletes from the 2023-24 calendar have been named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by Diverse magazine.

The honorees from App State, listed alphabetically, are Chad Bellis (wrestling), Alexia Grant (women’s basketball), Nicholas Grizales (wrestling), Cierra Huntley (volleyball), Niejel Wilkins (men’s track & field) and Maya Winterhoff (volleyball).

The Diverse: Issues In Higher Education edition recognizes outstanding young minority men and women who have distinguished themselves in their academic and athletic pursuits. In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are “students of color who have maintained at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, are at least sophomores academically and have been active on their campuses or in their communities.”
