The 2021 Mid-American Conference spring field hockey schedule has been released, the league announced Tuesday. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 fall field hockey season was postponed until spring 2021.
“I am extremely excited about releasing our schedule for this upcoming spring season. This gives our student-athletes something to strive for in the rest of our training this semester and the start of next season,” App State head coach Meghan Dawson said.
“These times have been extremely challenging and I am excited to give them hope for our next season. This refocuses our group knowing there will be a chance to compete for a MAC championship and be just as successful on the field as they continue to be in the classroom.”
App State will play 12 conference matches in a double round-robin format over a seven-week period between March 12 and April 24. Teams will face the same opponent twice in one weekend at one site. Matches will be played on Friday and Saturday.
The Mountaineers will also face Bellarmine (incoming MAC member in 2021-22) on April 9 and 10, providing a total of 14 matches. The regular-season champion will receive the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament.
“Our group has continued to remain diligent and smart during these times,” Dawson said. “The news of our schedule is a reward for all their patience through these unprecedented times. To say our group will be excited to compete is an understatement.”
App State’s season is highlighted by eight home matches, including the first two weekends of the season played at Adcock Field. The Mountaineers open the 2021 season hosting Ball State on March 12 and 13, followed by home matchups against Central Michigan on March 19 and 20.
The Black and Gold’s first road trip will be up to Kent State to take on the defending regular-season conference champions on March 26 and 27. The Mountaineers will continue their Ohio road trip with the Bobcats on April 2 and 3.
Before traveling to MAC tournament champion Miami on April 16 and 17, App State will host future MAC foe Bellarmine on April 9 and 10. The Mountaineers will play their final regular-season conference matchups against Longwood at home on April 23 and 24.
The Mountaineers look to build on a successful 2019 campaign, in which they finished 11-9 and posted the most wins since 2003. The 6-0 start to the 2019 season marked the best start in school history. App State’s 5-4 overtime victory in the quarterfinals over Ohio also propelled the Mountaineers to their third straight season with an appearance in the MAC Tournament semifinals.
