App Volleyball Adds Four Student-Athletes

App State volleyball head coach Matt Ginipro has announced the addition of four student-athletes to the program.

Ginipro welcomes outside hitter Lauren Ambrose (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill), right side Maddy Drye (Burlington, N.C./Homeschool), libero Alexis Hardison (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) and middle hitter Lauren Pledger (Charlotte, N.C./Mountain Island Charter School) to the program.

“I’m excited to get this 2021 class to Boone and start working with them,” said Ginipro. “It’s a great group of high level, local talent that will come in and do good things on the court. Three of them (Lauren, Lauren and Alexis) have played together on the same club team, so they’ll already be comfortable with each other. Maddy has been around our program for a long time, so she’ll also fit right in immediately.”

Lauren Ambrose
6-1; Outside Hitter
Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill
Ambrose won three letters for Fort Mill High School in Fort Mill, S.C. She earned All-Region honors in 2018, 2019 and 2020. During the 2020 season, she was named Team MVP after leading the team in kills.
Ginipro on Ambrose: “Lulu is a physical pin hitter who also has great energy on the court. She brings good size and skill to our attacking group and can play on either the left or right side for us.”

Maddy Drye
6-0; Right Side
Burlington, N.C./Homeschool
Drye hails from Burlington, N.C. She played for Alamance Homeschool team during the 2020 season and appeared in 26 matches, totaling 123 kills on a .423 hitting percentage. Drye earned all-conference honors during her sophomore and junior seasons.
Ginipro on Drye: “We’ve known Maddy for a long time through camps and she comes from an Appalachian State family. She will be part of our pin hitter group and has gotten significantly better over the past two seasons as an attacker. Her length will also help out our blocking numbers.”

Alexis Hardison
5-8; Libero
Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman
Hardison earned three letters for Lake Norman High School as a libero. Last season, was named to the Under Armour All-American Watch List for her efforts during the club season. As a junior, she tallied 307 digs and recorded 42 service aces.
Ginipro on Hardison: “Lex is a great defender and passer who will push for time as our libero right away. She’s also another player who grew up in an App State home. Her court awareness and platform skills make her a great addition to our back row group.”

Lauren Pledger
6-1; Middle Hitter
Charlotte, N.C./Mountain Island Charter School
Pledger was a two-time all-conference honoree for Mountain Island Charter School in Charlotte, N.C. As a sophomore, she was named to the AVCA Phenom List and was a member of the AVCA All-American Watch List earlier this season.
Ginipro of Pledger: “Lauren is really quick off the ground as a middle hitter and works really hard to be available. We also loved her energy on the court when we watched her play. Once she gets used to the speed of the college game, she’s going to be really good.”
