App Strate Women’s Golf Wins Match Play Event

App State women’s golf clinched second at the Aggie Spring Invitational Sunday with a gritty 3.0 vs 2.0 win over High Point University.

“We always enjoy match play,” head coach Heather Brown said. “It helps you to play a bit more relaxed knowing you can have a bad hole and still be in it, but it also puts pressure on you to execute shots and make putts to win a hole. Coming off of a not so great performance last week, I liked our hustle and desire this time around. We hung in there and fought for our wins. I know this will help our momentum going forward.”

It took playoff holes to defeat High Point Sunday. Meghan Mitchell forced four playoffs, not only to win her match 1-up but to clinch the runner-up honors for the Mountaineers. Despite lingering fog and soaring afternoon temperatures, both Bolt and Hardin also took care of business lifting App State over the Panthers.

Sunday’s second-place effort is the best team finish for the Mountaineers since the 2019-20 season opener at the Judaculla Cup.

Heading into Sunday, the Mountaineers split a pair of matches between NC A&T, the event host, and Central Michigan on Saturday. App State defeated NC A&T 4.0 vs 1.0 in round one. Abby Bolt, Meghan Mitchell, Kayla Ward and Sarah Hardin each won their respective match.

In round two, the Black and Gold dropped a hard-fought match against Central Michigan 3.0 vs 2.0. Ward and Carrie Catherine Ganim both recorded wins against the Chippewas. To conclude the event, App State tied tournament winner Central Michigan in overall individual player wins at nine.

App State will be back on the links March 13-14 for the Low Country Intercollegiate, hosted by Wofford in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
