App State’s Smith Named Sun Belt Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week

App State senior Taylor Smith snagged her second Sun Belt Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honor of the season, the league announced on Wednesday. Smith’s honor marks App State’s fourth SBC Athlete of the Week honor of the 2024 outdoor campaign.

At the Duke Invitational on April 11-13, Smith registered three top-five finishes. The Northern Charleston, S.C. native secured second in the women’s 200 meters with a season best time of 23.55, which moved her to fourth in the App State all-time list. In the women’s 4×100-meter relay, Smith ran the third leg of the race, helping the squad to a season best of 45.08 and second-place finish. She also recorded a personal best of 11.56 to place fourth in the women’s 100 meters, which moved her to fifth in the program all-time list.

Smith collected her first Sun Belt Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honor on March 20 after tallying three event wins at the Lenoir-Rhyne Open on March 16. She clinched first with a time of 11.60 in the women’s 100 meters. She ran the third leg of the women’s 4×100-meter relay, helping the quartet to a first-place finish and time of 44.75. She also landed first in the women’s long jump with a leap of 5.97m (19′ 7″).

In the Sun Belt Rankings, Smith stands fourth in the women’s 200 meters, seventh in the women’s 100 meters, and fifth in the women’s long jump. In the Southeast Region, Smith rounds out the top-15 in the women’s 100 meters, stands 17th in the women’s 200 meters, and 21st in the women’s long jump. She also ranks 84th nationally in the women’s 200 meters. As part of the women’s 4×100-meter relay team, she stands fourth in the Sun Belt, sixth in the Southeast Region, 34th in the NCAA East Prelim qualifying list, and 53rd in the NCAA overall.

The Mountaineers will split for the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. on April 19 and the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. on April 19-20.
