App State Women’s Tennis Picks Up First Win of the Season

App State tennis picked up its first win under head coach Hannah Fetters with a 6-1 victory over Queens in its home opener of the 2024 campaign. The Mountaineers move to 1-1 on the season with some all-around exceptional play.

“I feel really excited, I think the girls did a good job today,” said Fetters. “They were focused and had really good energy and that’s what helped us do a good job today.”

App State started the match strong by securing the doubles point early with a Queens forfeit on court No.3 and a victory on the No. 2 court from graduate student Maggie Pate/freshman Taya Powell, which marked the duo’s second win of the season. Despite a hard fight from the young team of freshman Naledi Manyube/sophomore Savannah Dada-Mascoll on the No. 1 court, the duo fell short.

The Mountaineers kept the momentum going into singles play as Manyube picked up her first win in the Black and Gold with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout on couth No. 3. Pate and Powell each improved to 2-0 in singles action, as Pate won 6-1, 6-2 at court No. 3 while Powell won 6-1, 6-1 at court No. 2. Senior Brooke Gruber closed out her match on the No. 5 court with a 7-5, 6-3 victory, to lead App State to its first team win on the young 2024 season.
