App State women’s tennis earned a narrow 4-3 victory against Georgia State in the Sun Belt home opener on Saturday at the Deer Valley Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers improve to 2-5 and 1-0 in the Sun Belt and while Georgia State falls to 2-7 and 0-1 in league action.
With a 3-3 tie in place, it was up to Sandra Anglesjö (Norrköping, Östergötland, Sweden/Fria Läroverken) to seal the win for the Mountaineers, and she delivered with a 6-2 second frame triumph following a tiebreaking first-set victory over Nansi Toskova as the No. 5 in the lineup.
Georgia State started the day off in the lead by capturing the doubles point before App claimed the four singles matches for the win.
Helena Figueras (Girona, Spain/Tyler JC) grabbed the first point for the Mountaineers thanks to her 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Ellie Aldrich. After the Panthers won on Court No. 2, María José Zacarias (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/La Loma Centro Deportivo) notched a hard-fought win over Eva Chivu. The senior won the tiebreaker in the first frame, 7-6 (7-2) followed by a 6-4 victory to seal the point.
The match went back and forth in finished matches until Virginia Poggi (Civitavecchia, Italy/Ernest Hemingway)also won her singles contest with scores of 6-4 and 7-5 against Alexia Alvarez. The win by Poggi set up Anglesjö’s match-deciding victory.
App State returns to action tomorrow against Georgia Southern at 10 a.m. at Deer Valley Racquet Club.
