App State Women’s Tennis Edged Out at Elon

App State women’s tennis suffered a narrow 4-3 decision to Elon on Wednesday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The Mountaineers fall to 1-5 on the season while Elon improves to 8-2.

App State nearly pulled off the comeback against an Elon team that’s undefeated at home, while it’s the second 4-3 decision in as many contests for the Apps.

Elon claimed the first three singles matches to take a 3-1 advantage before the Black and Gold came back to tie up the contest.

Helena Figueras (Girona, Spain/Tyler Junior College) won her second straight singles match with a straight-set triumph over Sofia Edo, 6-3, 7-5, as the No. 4 in the lineup. Ksenia Aleshina (Moscow, Russia) came back from a one-set deficit to defeat Sibel Tanik on Court No. 2. Aleshina fell in the first frame (6-3) before taking the next two sets, 6-3, 6-3, to bring the score to 3-3.

It came down to Court No. 1, where María José Zacarias (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/La Loma Centro Deportivo) forced a match-deciding third set after picking up the second frame, 7-5, against Victoria Saldh. However, Zacarias fell to Saldh 7-5 in a tightly-contested contest.

App State won the doubles point after Sandra Anglesjö(Norrköping, Östergötland, Sweden/Fria Läroverken) /Figueras defeated Alison O’Dea/Lizette Reding in a tiebreaking 7-6 (8-6) victory to give App State a 1-0 lead. Zacarias/Aleshina won their first match as a tandem after downing Tanik/ Shauna Galvin, 6-4.
