App State Women’s Tennis earned a 4-0 victory over Georgia Southern on Sunday at the Deer Valley Racquet Club to complete the weekend sweep.
The Mountaineers improve 3-5 and 2-0 in the Sun Belt, and Georgia Southern falls 4-6 and 0-2 in the league. It’s also the first shutout of the season for the Black and Gold.
App State continues its home dominance with 16 straight home wins and a 3-0 record this season at home.
App captured both doubles contests and three singles victories for the triumph.
Helena Jansen (Girona, Spain/Tyler JC)/Sandra Angelsjö (Norrköping, Östergötland, Sweden/Fria Läroverken) downed Nadja Meier/Hannah Daniel, 6-3, for the first win of the match before María José Zacarias (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/La Loma Centro Deportivo)/Ksenia Aleshina (Moscow, Russia) clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 triumph over Charlotte Van Diemen/Sophie Wagemaker.
Aleshina won her third match of the season and gave the Apps a 2-0 lead with a 6-1,6-2 victory against Van Diemen. Jansen continued the solid play for the Mountaineers and registered her third straight singles win after a 6-2,6-4 win against Wagemaker to give the Black and Gold a 3-0 lead.
Zacarias sealed the win for App State in a three-set victory Meier as the No. 1 in the lineup. She delivered a 7-5 third-set win after falling in the second set.
Appalachian will continue league action with two matches next week. The Mountaineers will be on the road to face Troy at 10 a.m. on Saturday before facing South Alabama at 10 a.m.
