App State Women’s Soccer Opens Conference Play With Win
For the fifth time this season, the App State defense held an opponent scoreless, while Izzi Wood’s second half goal provided all the offense the Mountaineers would need in a 1-0 victory over Troy in their Sun Belt Conference opener.
App State (4-3-1, 1-0-0), dominated possession throughout the match, holding a 58 percent to 42 percent advantage after 90 minutes, while outshooting the Trojans 11-5.
Just over four minutes into the second half, the Mountaineers broke the deadlock. Off an App State corner kick, Shannon Studer served a beautiful ball into the center of the box, and Wood came flying in to head the ball into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
The Trojans’ (5-4-0, 0-1-0) offensive opportunities were few and far between. Kerry Eagleston needed to make just one save on the night, posting her 22nd career clean sheet. The save was the 375th of Eagleston’s career, tying her for the program record.
Skyler Walk returned to the lineup to play all 90 minutes, as did her center back partner Kaitlyn Little.
Wood led the Mountaineers with four shots, including two on target, while Stephanie Barbosa and Summer Bowman each added two shots apiece.
App State will hit the road for the first time in conference play as they travel to Coastal Carolina for a matchup in Conway, Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Chanticleers opened conference play with a 1-0 loss against Old Dominion Friday night. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
