App State Women’s Soccer Finish in Third in Sun Belt Standings With Win at Georgia State
A third consecutive victory to finish the regular season came on the road, and in historic fashion.
App State topped Georgia State 1-0 on Thursday at the GSU Soccer Complex to secure a first-round bye in the Sun Belt tournament, and a third-place regular season finish, the best in program history.
The Mountaineers (9-5-3, 6-2-2) scored the lone goal of the match in the 29th minute of play. Mumu Guisasola received lead pass from Sarah Widderich down the right sideline and curled in a long service to the middle of the box where Summer Bowman leaped in the air and flicked a header into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season – the eventual game-winner.
Defensively the Mountaineers were stout, limiting the Panthers to four shots on goal, and posting their eighth shutout of the season, a program record, while Kerry Eagleston set the career shutout record with 25. She finished with four saves on the night.
App State finished the regular season with a .618 winning percentage, their best since 2003, while their .700 conference winning percentage is the best in program history.
The Black & Gold finished with 14 shots, including ten shots on goal, led by seven shots from Izzi Wood, including four on target. Barbosa added three shots, all on target.
App State will be the four-seed in the Sun Belt tournament where they will open on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET against fifth-seeded James Madison. All Sun Belt Tournament games will be played at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex and broadcast on ESPN+.
