App State Volleyball Snags Four to the Academic All-District Volleyball Team

App State senior Sophie Cain, junior Lauren Pledger, and sophomores Kenady Roper and Maya Winterhoff were named to the 2023 Academic All-District Women’s Volleyball Team, selected by College Sports Communicators, on Tuesday.

Appearing in all 29 matches this season, Cain recorded 1,370 assists and was second on the team in the assists category. Cain also tallied 209 digs on the year and served up 20 aces. The cellular and molecular biology major notched five double-doubles during the 2023 campaign. She also posted a season-high 26 assists in back-to-back matches against Campbell (Sept. 1) and East Carolina (Sept. 2). The Knoxville, Tenn. native tallied a career-high 20 digs against Wake Forest (Sept. 15) and Marshall (Oct. 21).

While studying construction management this season, Pledger started 25 of the 26 matches she appeared in. Over the course of the fall, the App State junior recorded 107 kills, averaging 1.14 per set. She also posted a season-high eight kills on two occasions. The middle blocker recorded a career-high eight blocks against North Carolina A&T (Sept. 7) as well as a career-high two solo blocks against James Madison (Sept. 22) Georgia State (Oct. 7). She also totaled 84 blocks, the second-most on the team, on the season. The Charlotte, N.C. native was named the 2023 Black & Gold Invitational MVP and earned a spot on the Black & Gold Invite All-Tournament team.

Roper, a human services major, tallied double-digit digs in 20 of the 25 matches she appeared in during the 2023 campaign. Roper led the team in the digs category, recording 352 this year. She also served up 30 aces this fall and made 76 assists. The Morganton, N.C. native posted a career-high 31 digs against ULM on Oct. 14 and matched her career-high four aces on two occasions. She also was named to the 2023 Black & Gold Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Starting all 29 matches this fall, Winterhoff collected Second-Team All-SBC honors in addition to Preseason All-SBC honors. While studying elementary education, Winterhoff led the team in the blocks category, totaling 130, and was third on the team in the kills category, tallying 239. Winterhoff led the Sun Belt with a hitting percentage of .383. The Charlottesville, Va. native slammed down a career-high 19 kills against Wake Forest (Sept. 15) and made a career-high five solo blocks against William & Mary (Aug. 25). Against Old Dominion (Oct. 26), Winterhoff recorded a hitting percentage of .818. During non-conference play, Winterhoff earned spots on the Mountaineer Classic, ECU Tournament, and Black & Gold Invitational All-Tournament teams.

The Mountaineers went 14-15 (4-12 SBC) and 10-4 in Holmes this fall.

To be nominated for CSC Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA at their current institution and have played in at least 90 percent of the team’s contests or must start in at least 66 percent of the team’s contests. Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. CSC Academic All-America honorees will be announced in early January.
