App State Track and Field to Send Four to NCAA East Preliminary Round

App State seniors Ryan Brown and Hassani Burris, and juniors Taylor Smith and Jada Branch have qualified for the 2022 NCAA East Preliminary Round, which will be hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., May 25-28 at Haugh Track & Field.

Smith will compete in the women’s long jump, set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 26. After the Sun Belt Championships, Smith rose to 46th in the NCAA East Region rankings in the women’s long jump category with a personal best mark of 6.11m (20′ 0.5″). Her personal best also ties her for fifth with Linda McKoy in the App State record book. She placed second on the podium and earned Second-Team All-Conference honors last weekend.

Brown has qualified for the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase. Brown ranked 35th in the region after clocking the App State school record (8:51.28) on April 7. At the Sun Belt Championships, Brown placed second in the event with a time of 9:06.55, earning Second-Team All-Conference accolades.

Branch and Burris have qualified for the women’s triple jump. In the regional rankings, Branch checks in at 29th after posting a personal best mark of 12.86m (42′ 2.25″) on April 7. Branch garnered Second-Team All-Conference recognition with her second-place finish in the women’s triple jump at the Sun Belt Championships, posting a leap of 12.78m (41′ 11.25″). Burris is 41st in the regional rankings with a leap of 12.70m (41′ 8″), set on April 22. Burris took fifth at the Sun Belt Championships in the women’s triple jump with a mark of 12.19m (40′ 0″). The women’s triple jump is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 28.

The top-12 competitors from each individual event at the NCAA East Preliminary Round will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. on June 8-11.
