The App State softball team fell to South Alabama in the opening round of the 2021 Sun Belt Championship Wednesday afternoon by a score of 11-0 in five innings. The Jaguars move to 27-17 on the year, while the Mountaineers fall to 26-18.
South Alabama struck first in the bottom of the second, hitting back-to-back singles to set up for a double by Bailey Welch to bring in the first two runs of the game. The third inning saw another Jaguar run, as Kennedy Cronan doubled to bring in Caroline Nichols who reached safely on a single. Mackenzie Brasher also attempted to score on the play but was thrown out at home.
The fourth inning was a big inning for the South Alabama offense, exploding for eight runs off seven hits, including a three-run home run from Abby Krzywiecki and a solo shot from Cronan. Six different Jaguars ended their day with an RBI. Kryzywiecki led the way with three.
Kenzie Longanecker made the start for the Mountaineers in the circle, pitching two outs in the fourth before Delani Buckner came on in relief. Longanecker (14-7) received the loss, giving up seven runs on eight hits. After back-to-back home runs, Buckner was replaced by Camryn Brazile, who threw to two batters before Sydney Holland closed out the game.
South Alabama starter Olivia Lackie (17-9) was solid in the circle for the Jaguars, receiving the win and throwing five shutout innings. Her no-hitter was broken up in the top of the fifth when Mary Pierce Barnes singled to the third baseman. The sophomore ended her day with nine strikeouts.
The Mountaineers now fall to the loser’s bracket and will take on the loser of #2 seed Texas State and #10 Georgia State at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
