App State Softball Loses Series Finale With Texas-Arlington

After clinching the series yesterday with a pair of wins, the App State softball team (29-21, 10-12 Sun Belt) dropped the series finale against UT Arlington (22-22, 12-12 Sun Belt) by a final score of 4-1. A three-run home run in the top of the third inning proved to be the difference as the Mavericks were able to avoid the sweep.

UT Arlington opened the scoring early, plating one run in the top half of the first inning. After KJ Murphy drew a leadoff walk, she was brought home via an RBI-single up the middle from Morgan Rios.
The difference in the contest came when Kimber Cortemelia hit a three-run home run to put the Mavericks up 4-0.

The Mountaineers got on the board in the bottom half of the third. McKenzie McCullen’s RBI-single through the right side drove in Kayt Houston. App State was able to threaten quite a few times in the game, but struggled to find home plate. The Mountaineers left the bases loaded in the bottom of the third and left two runners on in four different innings.

Baylee Morton paced the App State offense with two hits on the day. McCullen had one hit and picked up an RBI. Five different Mountaineers also contributed with one hit: Emma Jones, Emily Parrott, Mary Pierce Barnes, Addie Wray and Kati Waalk.

Saturday’s series finale served as Senior Day and also marked the end of home play for the Mountaineers this season. App State finished the year with an 11-6 home record.

The Mountaineers will conclude regular season play next week when they travel to Coastal Carolina. App State will battle the Chanticleers in a doubleheader on Thursday, May 5 before playing in the regular season finale on Friday, May 6.
