App State Softball Loses Finale to Georgia Southern

After Saturday’s victory clinched the series for App State (19-14, 7-5 Sun Belt), the Mountaineers were defeated by Georgia Southern (9-20, 4-8 Sun Belt) in Game 3 on Sunday by a final score of 11-8. Following a pair of heavily-defensive contests, the two teams combined for 19 runs and 27 hits.

The Eagles gained a big advantage early after scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. App State responded with two runs in the bottom of the second as Addie Wray, a Bunker Hill grad, and Kennedy Upshire both recorded an RBI single.

Baylee Morton belted a home run over the center field wall to kickstart a five-run third inning for the Mountaineers. Upshire then drove in two more runs to score Wray and McKenzie McCullen. In the next at bat, Emma Jones gave App State its first lead of the day after doubling to left center to bring home Upshire and Kylie LaRousa.

A solo home run from Georgia Southern’s Jess Mazur leveled the score at 7-7 after five and a half innings of play. Jones fired back in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring an unearned to give App State the lead again. Four unanswered runs from Georgia Southern pushed the final score to 11-7, enabling the Eagles to avoid the sweep.

Wray led the Mountaineers with a 3-for-4 performance on the day. She also drove in one run and scored once as well. Upshire and McCullen each posted a pair of hits as Upshire drove in a team-high three runs. Every Mountaineer in the lineup picked up at least one hit on the afternoon.

Despite the Game 3 loss, the Mountaineers have now won three of their four in-league series this season. App State returns to action at home on Friday when they host South Alabama in the first game of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series. First pitch for Game is slated for 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
