App State Softball Drops Two Games to Coastal

The App State softball team fell to Coastal Carolina in both games of its final regular season doubleheader on Friday, 8-0 and 12-3 (6 innings). The Mountaineers are now 26-17 and 8-12 in conference play. The Chanticleers move to 21-23, 9-15 in the Sun Belt.

The final seeding for the 2021 Sun Belt Softball Tournament will be announced following the last regular season games on Saturday.

Game 1

Coastal Carolina picked up where they left off in game one of the series, hitting four home runs in game two. The Chanticleers took the lead in the top of the third as Makiya Thomas brought in Taylor Sweigart on an RBI single. The lead went to 2-0 in the fourth as Mary Sobataka hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Sydney Guess.

In the top of the sixth, Riley Zana and Sweigart each hit a home run with Riley’s being a two-run shot and Sweigart’s a solo shot. The Chanticleers scored their final runs in the top of the seventh with a solo shot from Mackenzie Beyer and another two-run home run from Riley.

Kaitlin Beasley Polko (10-9) shut the Mountaineers down, pitching the complete game win and giving up one hit. She had two strikeouts on the day. Sydney Holland (7-6) received the loss, pitching the first five innings, giving up five runs on nine hits. Camryn Brazile came on in the sixth and gave up four runs on four hits. Taylor Nichols threw the final out, coming on in relief for Brazile in the seventh.

At the plate, Kayt Houston had the Mountaineers hit, while Taylor Thorp and Maegan Calandra both reached safely on a walk.

Game 2

The Mountaineers took an early lead in game two, scoring a run in the second and third. Thorp hit a sacrifice fly to score Mary Pierce Barnes in the second and Keri White hit her fourth home run of the season in the third.

From there, Coastal took the lead in the fourth and would hold onto it the remainder of the game. Two Mountaineer errors aided in the three runs scored for Coastal in the fourth. Pinch runner Michaela McAuley scored on a missed throw to home and a wild pitch scored the second run. A sacrifice fly from Sobataka scored the third.

The fifth inning saw six more Chanticleer runs, as Coastal pieced together four hits, including a double to score the runs. In the sixth, Kayla Rosado doubled and Beyer hit a solo shot to bring the run total to 12.

The Mountaineers scored their final run in the fifth as Emily Parrott scored off an error by the Chanticleer shortstop.

Delani Buckner (4-4) made the start in the circle for App State, pitching four innings and giving up five runs on five hits. Kenzie Longanecker came on in the fifth, giving up six runs on five hits. Taylor Nichols pitched the final two outs for the Mountaineers, giving up a home run.

At the plate for App State, White, Caylie Kifer, Barnes, Buruato (2) and Parrott each recorded a hit.

The Mountaineers will open the Sun Belt Tournament on Wednesday, with seeding and opponent to be determined.
