The App State softball team tallied its sixth straight win on Wednesday afternoon, taking down UNC Greensboro 4-3. The Mountaineers are now 17-10 on the season, while UNCG falls to 17-11.
The Mountaineers used a balanced attack against the Spartans, with five different players tallying a hit. Taylor Thorp had the go-ahead two RBI single in the fourth and Gabby Buruato added the insurance RBI in the sixth to push the Mountaineers to victory. Sidney Russell tallied the other RBI for App State in the fourth off a double to left field.
UNCG scored first in the tight game, plating two in the top of the fourth to take the lead. After two singles put runners on first and third with one out for the Spartans, App State’s Kenzie Longanecker came on in relief for starter Delani Buckner. Longanecker got the next batter to ground out to first base but Jordan Gontram hit the two-out single to bring in both runners for UNCG.
Buckner ended her day with two strikeouts, giving up two runs and three hits in her 3.1 innings of work.
The Mountaineers quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on a Spartan error. Baylee Morton started App State as she reached safely on a walk. She reached second on a throwing error by the first baseman, with Mary Pierce Barnes reaching on a fielder’s choice.
Russell stepped up to the plate and hit a double to left field, her fourth of the season, scoring Morton. With two outs and two runners on, Thorp was able to single to center field to bring in Barnes and Russell. Thorp was ultimately thrown out trying to advance to second, but both runs scored before the final out.
Buruato’s run scored in the bottom of the sixth was a big one, as she doubled to bring in Russell who reached safely on a walk. Russell’s run was ultimately the game-winner, with UNCG scoring one more in the top of the seventh off a double from Delaney Cumbie and a single from Hannah Kincer.
Longanecker (10-3) earned the win in the circle, throwing 3.2 innings, giving up three hits and one run. She had one strikeout on the day. Morgan Scott (8-5) went the distance for the Spartans, giving up five hits and four runs, striking out five.
For UNCG at the plate, Kincer went two-for-three with an RBI. Gontram added a hit and two RBIs.
The Mountaineers return to Sun Belt play this weekend, hosting ULM in a three-game series beginning on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. The final game of the series will take place on Sunday at 11 a.m.
