App State Men’s Golf Finish Sixth at Elon’s Phoenix Invitational
Led by Addison Beam’s runner-up finish at 11 under and a tie for 16th by Herman Huus, who shot a final-round 65, App State Men’s Golf placed sixth in the 16-team field at the Phoenix Invitational hosted by team champion Elon.
Beam’s 202 total (69-66-67 on the par-71 layout at Alamance Country Club) beat his previous 54-hole low of 205 from last year’s Phoenix Invitational and also beat his previous best finish of a tie for third at the 2022 River Run Collegiate. Beam finished three shots behind medalist Jack Wofford of Presbyterian (67-66-66—199, 14 under).
Beam holed out from roughly 160 yards on the par-4 seventh hole in Round 2 and had six birdies during his final round, including four birdies over his final eight holes.
Starting on the 10th hole Tuesday, Huus’ 65 included five straight birdies and a nine-hole stretch (last three holes on back, then first six on front) played in a 7-under 29.
Huus’ 65, Beam’s 67, a 1-under 70 from Aidan Browning and a 73 from Sverrir Haraldsson contributed to a 9-under round of 275 that allowed the Mountaineers to jump five spots in the team standings on the final day. They posted an 8-under total (288-281-275—844).
Browning tied for 34th at 1 over (72-72-70—214). His brother, Colin, played three rounds and shot a second-round 74, while Colin Bergheim had a 73 in the final round.
