Dylan Lukes and App State men’s golf both placed second at the Sea Palms Invitational Saturday from St. Simons Island, Georgia. Lukes finished second on the player leaderboard, and the Mountaineers placed second overall as a team in a field of 16.
“I’m super proud of the guys today,” head coach Jason Allison said. “We showed a lot of grit in the final round as the wind gusts were tough on all the teams. We’re getting close. Dylan was in fine form all three days, and we are looking forward to next week as we host Bash at the Beach.”
Jacksonville State won the team title with a final team score of 870, just three strokes better than the Mountaineers’ 873. App State has now finished top three or better as a team in all four events of the 2020-21 season.
Lukes‘ 214 elevated him to second and a career-best finish on the player leaderboards. Chattanooga’s A.J. Lintunen clinched the individual crown with 2-under 211.
Lukes opening-round 68, with five birdies on the back nine, marked the best round among the Mountaineer starting five this weekend. The 68 also tied his career low for a round.
Timothius Tirto Tamardi carded a 219 for his 13th top-15 finish of his collegiate career. Sverrir Haraldsson posted a career-best finish on the player leaderboards as well, tying for 20th with a 54-hole total of 221. Lukas Jönsson tied for 26th by closing with a 222 event score.
Jake Lane rounded out the starting five with a 226, tying for 44th by firing back-to-back rounds of 75.
As a team, the Mountaineers posted an event-leading, 15-under-par score on the par 5s. Both Lukes and Haraldsson connected on an eagle.
App State will be back in action March 15-16 as the Mountaineers host the Bash at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at Surf Golf and Beach Club.
