App State Field Hockey Wins First Contest of the Season

App State field hockey held Ball State scoreless in a 1-0 bounce-back win Saturday. The Mountaineers improved to 1-1 in Mid-American Conference play and 1-2 overall.

“We kept the shutout,” head coach Meghan Dawson said. “That was one of our goals in our team talk today. We talked about it being a whole team effort, not just the back or a goalie thing. It takes the whole team. I’m really excited for our girls. We took the steps that we needed to.”

Rachel Fleig recorded the lone goal of the day in thrilling fashion. Fleig redirected a shot from Friederike Stegen past the goalie with under a minute to play before the half. Stegen was credited with the assist, the 16th of her career.

Stegen is now two assists away from tying Bridgette Burkhardt (18) for second all-time in career assists in program history.

The front-to-back defensive effort held the Cardinals to only three shots on the day. Annette Jarosz’s back line presence, including a defensive save for the second straight game, helped keep Ball State off the board.

App State will be back in action Monday as the Mountaineers host Saint Louis in a nonconference matchup. Monday’s contest from Brandon and Erica M. Adcock Field is set for 11 a.m.
