App State field hockey opens Mid-American Conference play Friday and Saturday as the Mountaineers host Ball State. The two-game home stand and all remaining home contests this spring season will be live streamed on Twitch at appstatesports.
The live stream is free of charge and can be accessed at this link, http://twitch.tv/appstatesports. The link will be the same for all home games, and will directly take the viewer to the appstatesports page and the stream.
The weekend series will be the 11th and 12th all-time meetings between the Mountaineers and the Cardinals. Both games are scheduled for a noon start at Brandon & Erica M. Adock Field. Ball State currently holds a 7-3 all-time series lead over App State.
“I’m really excited to open up conference play this weekend,” head coach Meghan Dawson said. “Ball State is an extremely tough team, especially defensively. Last year, it went down to the final minute of the game. Our group is excited to play at home for the first time in over a year. I think it will be an extremely exciting weekend of hockey.”
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS:
App State opened the 2021 spring season with a 4-2 loss at Davidson on Feb. 27. Freshman Grace Ball and sophomore Pauline Mangold each connected on a goal against the Wildcats. Ball scored her first career goal in her first collegiate appearance.
Friederike Stegen (15) is three assists away from tying Bridgette Burkhardt for second all-time in program history for career assists.
On March 2, App State was picked to finish tied for fourth in the 2021 MAC Preseason Poll with 24 total votes. At 23 votes, Ball State was picked to finish sixth. The Mountaineers finished 1-5 in conference play in 2019 but survived and advanced to make their third straight appearance in the MAC Tournament semifinals.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS:
Ball State enters the weekend 0-2 on the season after dropping games at Miami (OH) and versus No. 8 Louisville. Ball State lost to Miami (OH) 2-1 and 5-0 to No. 8 Louisville.
In 2019, the Cardinals finished 5-13 overall and 3-3 in the MAC. In the last meeting against the Mountaineers, Ball State scored with under a minute left to play to defeat App State 1-0 in Muncie, Indiana.
