App State Field Hockey Picks Up Road Win at Ohio

App State field hockey edged Ohio 2-1 in the closing minutes of play Friday. Friederike Stegen redirected the game-winning goal at the 55 minute mark to lift the Mountaineers to victory.

“I’m really excited about this win for our group,” head coach Meghan Dawson said. “Ohio is always a battle each year, and today was no exception. We fought today, and it was a huge team win.”

App State (4-5, 3-4 MAC) corrected a two-game skid with the road conference win. Friday’s win also marked App State’s first road win of 2021.

The Mountaineers’ offensive attack awoke early in the second quarter with five of 10 recorded shots.

Sarah Farrell put App State on the board first at the 19 minute mark in the second. Farrell’s defensive takeaway, drive through circle and flick of a goal marked the seventh time this season in which the Black abd Gold has scored first.

Ohio (2-5, 2-4 MAC) tied the game at one apiece right out of the break, one minute into the third period.

Addie Clark was credited with a season-high seven saves Friday. Clark’s one-on-one diving save at the 58 minute mark eliminated the Bobcats’ final tying threat.
