App State field hockey suffered a 3-2 double overtime defeat to Central Michigan Saturday.
App State scored the perennial go-ahead goal with 4:50 remaining when Meghan Smart found an open Carli Ciocco on the backside of the cage. Ciocco’s first goal of the season, second of her career, gave the Mountaineers the lead momentarily.
With 2:56 left to play, Central Michigan answered to tie the contest 2-2 shortly after pulling their goalie for a man-up situation. The Chippewas ultimately clinched the victory by scoring a sudden death goal four minutes into the second overtime period.
With the loss, App State fell to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in Mid-American Conference play.
All five goals scored Saturday were scored in the third quarter or later. Smart sneaked one past the keeper in the third for the first goal of the game and to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead heading into the fourth. App State has now scored first in four of five games this season.
Central Michigan would originally tie the game at one apiece at the 7:42 mark in the fourth off a corner and an ensuing goal from Taryn Damm.
App State earned 12 corners and fired a total of 31 shots but could only find the back of the cage twice. On the defensive side of the ball, Mountaineer defense held Central Michigan to just seven shots.
