App State field hockey dropped its home and MAC opener against Ball State 2-1 Friday.
For the second consecutive game, the Mountaineers lit up the scoreboard first. In the second quarter, Sarah Farrell connected on a goal from just inside the circle to give App State a 1-0 advantage with 8:17 left to play before half. The rocket of a goal was Farrell’s first of the season and the second of her career.
App State rattled off three shot attempts in a row, two on goal, shortly after Farrell’s but was unable to find the back of the net.
Ball State knotted up the contest going into half with an under three-minute goal by Maureen Donegan. The Cardinals’ go-ahead and winning goal came in the third from Kerrianne McClay at the 5:50 mark.
Annette Jarosz accounted for a defensive save late in the fourth to keep the man-up Mountaineers within striking distance. App State outshot the Cardinals 11-8 on the day with seven shots on goal. Friederike Stegen and Chloe Bell each recorded two shots on goal.
Of the three goals scored Friday, none were off of corners as both teams were awarded three apiece.
