App State Baseball Drops Series Finale at South Alabama

South Alabama scored at least one run in five different frames, Sunday, topping the Mountaineers, 9-0, to complete a three-game sweep.

The Jaguars (20-10, 7-5) began their scoring in the second inning. Santi Montiel bounced a double inside the third base bag to score a pair of runs, and Joseph Sullivan followed with an RBI triple to make it 3-0.

App State (10-19, 3-9) starter Trey Tujetsch went three innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. The Mountaineer bullpen finished the ballgame, combining to allow just one earned run over the final five frames. Cameron Carter, Eli Ellington, and Caleb Cross each worked 1.1 innings.

Ellington came on with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning, and was able to get the second out of the frame when a Jaguar was caught in between third and home on a missed bunt. Ellington then struck out the next batter to escape the jam. He finished with two strikeouts on the day.

Offensively, the Mountaineers were held without a hit until the fifth inning, when Hayden Cross singled to right field. The Mountaineers’ best scoring opportunity came an inning later, when Andrew Terrell ripped a double down the left field line to lead off the frame. Terrell advanced to third base on a wild pitch one batter later, but App State was unable to score him.

The Mountaineers look to snap a six-game skid when they return to Smith Stadium on Tuesday to face High Point at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
